Discover Horses celebrates the unique relationship that exists between horse and man – one of partnership, trust, strength, and beauty. Through hands-on experiences, Discover Horses program participants discover the ways of the horse; and, in so doing, discover something about themselves.

Program for Riders and Non Riders Alike
Discover Horses is intended for anyone with the desire to know more about horses. The program emphasizes learning about horses within many different contexts at many different levels – from beginning to expert horsemanship, to the spiritual connection between horses and humans, to understanding horse language and herd behavior. Regularly scheduled Discover Horses learning sessions and other events let program members experience horses under a wide range of circumstances. While riding is encouraged and supported, it is optional.

Leadership Training Through Interactions with Horses

Horses are unique among domesticated animals. They are one of few prey animals with which humans establish meaningful relationships. Humans are predators and we see the world through the eyes of the hunter; horses are prey, and they see the world through the eyes of the hunted. This fundamental and profound difference in world views requires both species – humans and horses – to step outside themselves to establish a meaningful relationship with each other.

Horses’ prey instincts and natural sensitivity to their environment enable them to give us feedback on our own behavior. They “read” our emotions and intentions – our fear, anger, trust, or confidence; and they react accordingly. Their reactions are neither subtle nor delayed, but clear and immediate. Horses are not influenced by the distinctions that may have great meaning to us in our world, such as body size and shape, age, gender, social standing, job, or career position, mean nothing to them. We are all simply potential predators to them.

Leading the Herd Leadership Program uses horses’ sensitivity to humans to examine our ways of leading and communicating. Program participants become more effective leaders in the human world by learning to be effective leaders in the horses’ world. Through a number of “hands on” exercises and activities with horses, participants learn key aspects of effective leadership in both the human and horse worlds. The horses are the teachers—we facilitate by creating the right circumstances for learning. Sessions are tailored to the each group’s specific goals, back grounds, and structure. You will learn a great deal about yourself by learning about horses!

    fishing and floating

    Available March - November

The Bitterroot River is a Mecca for fly fishermen, kayakers, floaters, inner tubers, swimmers, and bird watchers. Dunrovin Ranch has over ½ mile of Bitterroot River access with some of the very best fishing, a great spring fed swimming hole, and sandy beaches.

Dunrovin Ranch is proud to partner with local outfitter Grizzly Hackle to offer a variety of fishing packages. The Grizzly Hackle has a dedicated crew that has introduced thousands of anglers - beginners and experts alike - to the trout of western Montana. With one of the finest guide staffs along side a full service fly shop, the Grizzly Hackle is here to meet your every need. Hailing from all over, our professional "trout bums" live to get all of our clients into fish. Whether you want to fish all day long or want to learn the finer points of stripping streamers, they love to do it all. Each guide is an accomplished nympher, dry fly fisherman, and oarsman; but more importantly, each has the river and life experience to make a day on the water a rare gem. We are extremely lucky to be located at the junction of four of the greatest trout streams in the lower 48. Within an hour in every direction we have over 150 miles of navigable water just full of wild rainbows, cutthroat, brookies, browns, and cutbows! Unlike a lot of other areas we are blessed with having roughly 85 - 90% of our fishing done with dry flies!
